In our homeschool, we spend the early elementary years practicing strong sentences before moving into formal composition. These farm writing prompts are one of my favorite ways to build writing confidence and stamina in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. With simple pictures, vocabulary ideas, and guided pages, children can focus on forming sentences, using descriptive words, and organizing their thoughts.
In our homeschool, I don’t start a formal writing or composition curriculum until at least 4th or 5th grade. Aside from doing the composition exercises in Rod and Staff English, my main focus of those years is writing solid sentences and paragraphs. I use various resources to give them practice with sentences, including activities like this Farm Writing Booklet.
Some of my children picked up writing very easily, and others have definitely struggled (and currently struggle!).
Writing solid sentences and paragraphs takes inordinate amounts of modeling and instruction. One of the many ways we work on this in our homeschool is with these writing booklets with picture dictionaries. My children have used plenty of these types of writing booklets over the years!

My youngest who is currently 4 will also practice with these when he is older. Right now, he’s busy outside whacking everything he can find with a bat. There will be plenty of academic time later!
