Prior to our school year beginning, I scoured the internet looking for a civics type class for my 6 year old son. To say I came up empty-handed is an understatement.
I was so disappointed! My son is really interested in the President, the government and how laws are formed and why we have them. So I just put it on the backburner, but kept my eyes peeled for any opportunities.
Enter: Founders Academy.
While searching through CurrClick one day, I saw an offering for a middle school class on “Money, Banking and The Federal Reserve.”
Not quite civics, but we’re heading in the right direction!
It turns out that this course was offered through Founders Academy. As I searched through their course catalog, I found several classes geared towards my son’s age group: My 1st Economics Class and My 1st Constitution Class.
BINGO! Just what I was looking for!
Our First Experience in an Online Class
My son and I had never attended a class in a webinar format. What a nice change of pace for both of us! We could easily see Mrs. Schott as she taught the class and view anything written on her online white board. We could also type in questions as they arose.
From My 1st Economics class, my son definitely took away the concept of value. Mrs. Schott explained in children’s terms how we make our choices at the store and why we choose what we do. My son can now easily explain why he wants chewing gum at the grocery store check-out line: “I value the gum more than I do my dollar, Mama!” I’d say he gets it!
My 1st Constitution class covered the branches of government and how one doesn’t have more authority over the other. My son definitely walked away with a better knowledge of why we vote for our elected officials and what part they play in the government. Due to a very thorough review of The Bill of Rights, he also understands our rights as Americans.

Mrs. Schott has a knack for bringing the complexities of government down to the level of a lower grammar student. Her demeanor is gentle and her teaching style is personable and easy to follow. We can’t wait to take more of her classes!
