Summer word searches are a simple way to keep older elementary students reading, spelling, and thinking during the summer months. They are easy to print, easy to use, and just enough fun that they do not feel like another full worksheet assignment.
This set of Summer Word Searches was created especially for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Each puzzle includes a summer-themed word list with 25 words to find, making these a good fit for older elementary learners who are ready for a bit more of a challenge.
You can use these summer word searches for morning work, quiet time, summer review, early finishers, homeschool lessons, summer school, or a simple screen-free activity.
My 9-year-old son is finishing up 3rd grade this year, so these word searches are just right for him this summer! Summer Word Searches for 3rd-5th Grades
While I have a multitude of word searches for K-2nd grade, I only have a couple of sets for older elementary. I’m excited to publish a new packet for the 3rd through 5th grade skill level!
Word search packets are an easy way to incorporate vocabulary words, spelling, and summer or holiday learning. Word searches also broaden my child’s frame of reference. I love it when we come across words my son doesn’t know. What a perfect opportunity to talk about their meaning!

Summer Vocabulary Practice for Older Elementary Students
Word searches are an easy way to keep vocabulary and spelling in front of your students during the summer. They give children practice reading carefully, recognizing spelling patterns, and scanning for words in different directions.
This packet is designed for 3rd–5th grade students, so the word lists are a bit longer than my younger elementary word search packets. Each puzzle includes 25 words, which gives students more to work through without turning the activity into a long assignment.
These are especially helpful when you need something that is:
- Independent
- Low-prep
- Screen-free – YES! 🎉
- Easy to check
- Useful for a wide age range
- Simple enough for summer days
How to Use These Summer Word Searches
You can use this packet in several different ways depending on your home or classroom.
Use one word search each week during the summer months, or print several at once and keep them in a folder for (hopefully!) quiet afternoons. They also work well as a simple activity for road trips, vacation downtime, library days, summer camps, or days when you need something ready to go.
If you are homeschooling through the summer, you can add one of these puzzles to a short morning basket or summer review routine. The Summer Reading, Summer Science, National Parks, Ocean Animals, and Summer Weather puzzles are especially nice if you want a little learning tucked into your summer plans.
For classroom use, these summer word searches work well for early finishers, morning work, substitute folders, or the last few weeks of school.
Ways to Extend These Summer Word Searches
These summer word searches are ready to use as-is, but you can also stretch them a bit if you want more practice and to add to the learning.
Here are a few simple ideas to get you started:
- Have your student choose 5 words and write a sentence with each one.
- Ask your student to alphabetize 10 words from the word list.
- Let your student choose 3 words to define in a notebook.
Free free to download the Definition Worksheet as an alternative to writing in a notebook. My oldest boy loved these! - Use one puzzle as the start of a short summer writing prompt.
- Have your student circle unfamiliar words and look them up in the dictionary.
- Pair the National Parks puzzle with a map of the United States.
Download this free printable U.S. map and have your child note each National Park. Encourage him to make a map legend and possibly write in the abbreviation of each state. - Pair the Summer Reading puzzle with a library trip or reading log.
- Choose 10-15 words and practice print or cursive handwriting this summer.
You do not need to do any of those extras, of course. Sometimes the best summer activity is the one you can simply print and hand to your student.
