But now I understand. Once upon a time, marriage meant the joining not just of two people, but of two families. Two bloodlines. You only got one chance at it, and it was a decision that was made for life. So understandably they took it very seriously. Hollywood would probably echo my earlier sentiments... "So backwards and restrictive," and show you endless movies of stupid bumbling men, and amazing, working single moms who always meet Prince Charming. But by now, we all know this is a fairytale. When I've asked older Indian couples what it was like to have an arranged marriage vs marrying for "love", they all said the same thing: "Love grows with time". But with so much common ground between them, meticulously arranged by both families, there is little to disagree about. Unlike our American marriages, often born out of sexual desire, false expectations, and shallow ideals--with little common ground between us--their foundation is rock solid, built upon the elements required for a lasting relationship.So what is the result of the so-called backwards attitudes towards marriage in India? The divorce rate is the lowest in the world!And although, in the end, my friend chose his own wife, he used all his parents' advice to find the right woman who shares the same education, values, and spiritual beliefs as him, and who honors and respects his family. He is now very happily married, for life.So this is a message for parents of young adults: help your kids choose their spouses wisely. Treat it as a life and death decision, because that's what it is.
