I am always excited to share curriculum posts and today I am sharing with you all our 9th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices 2025-2026! This is my 16th year homeschooling and it will be my 3rd time to teach 9th grade. I teach my children a Christian Classical education here at home, so of course my curriculum choices will reflect that.
My oldest son attended private schools from 7th-9th grades, so even though my #4 child (of 5) is my current 9th grader, this is only my 3rd time teaching it.
I have found that 9th grade is a challenging year in many aspects: it is a hard year emotionally for my children as they transition from young teen years into middle teen years and it is a hard year academically as we start high school course work.
So I give much, much grace during the 9th grade year as my child adapts to a different work load and a generally new phase of life. Sadly, it took me a long time to understand those things (I’m sorry, my Clara!), but I get it now! And so I adjust my teaching and especially my expectations for my ninth grade students.

So let’s jump in!
9th Grade Algebra I
After using BJU Press math for 6th Grade, 7th Grade, and Pre-Algebra in 8th Grade, my daughter has a solid foundation to move on to BJU Press Algebra I in 9th grade this year. While math is certainly not her favorite subject (she is a creative at heart!), BJU Press gives us a solid foundation and we just move along in baby steps each day.
Often the lessons take two days, and I am okay with that. We will finish Algebra when we finish Algebra. Consistency is key in the homeschool setting, and Algebra is no different!
I used the previous 3rd Edition with my other children, and I highly recommend BJU Algebra I, 4th Edition! It is much improved in layout and teaching helps!

9th Grade Biology
Typically, I have my 9th grade children take Physical Science, however, I am having this particular 9th grader take BJU Biology instead so she can take it along with her older sister.
Honestly, I am not sure what the rest of her high school science sequence will look like yet since I switched things up with having her complete Biology this year. I will cross that bridge when I get there next March and April when it is time to plan for next year.
We are only a few weeks into the new year, however, Biology with her sister seems to be going well so far for my daughter. And I am thrilled! I needed to put them both in the same science for my own sanity. There is, after all, only one of me to go around during the day.
I am not sure if we will complete a full Biology lab or not. I need to get my bearings in this school year, and then I will make that decision.
We are using the updated BJU Biology, 6th Edition.
9th Grade Christian Studies
I am again switching up my current 9th grader’s Christian Studies track for this year. Instead of reading Acts of the Apostles and The Wars of the Jews – our homeschool’s typical 9th grade track – my 9th grader is going to complete the first half of BJU Bible Doctrines. I found that this course is best split into two separate years for my children so we do not have to rush through it.
My 9th grader will complete the first half of the text using the video instruction available through BJU Bible Doctrines Streaming Option. We also have class a couple of times each week to discuss the reading, answer the questions, review the memorization, and complete the extra activities that I choose for us to do.
➡️ Last year, I wrote How We Use BJU Bible Doctrines Curriculum, which includes a thorough review. Take a look and see if it would be a good fit for your high school student!
9th Grade Literature
My daughter will be completing the 9th Grade Literature Set from Memoria Press, which is one of my favorite sets! This literature year focuses on Old English and Medieval works including Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
We are using the 9th grade literature plans, which also includes selections from Poetry, Prose, and Drama Book One: The Old English and Medieval Periods Set and a few chapters from The Book of the Middle Ages.
My daughter is a slower reader, so we might not get to all of the selections, but we will try!
9th Grade Classical Studies
My 9th grader will also take this Classical Studies class with Memoria Academy. The first semester she will learn about Ancient Rome in The Book of the Ancient Romans and she will read through The Aeneid during the second half of the year.
We have much experience with Memoria Academy (formerly Memoria Press Online Academy), and I have no doubt she will learn much! She is excited about having Mr. Wolfe as her online teacher.
9th Grade Composition and Grammar
My 9th grade daughter will complete Classical Composition: Common Topic using Memoria Academy with Mrs. Johnson as her online teacher. I (almost) completely outsource composition in the high school years, and that is always a decision that proves to be positive!
I have seen the fruit of Classical Composition – and Classical Education as a whole – in my older children, and I am always so pleased and filled with gratitude that the Lord led me down this path many years ago. I wasn’t so sure when we started out!
My 9th and 11th grader both need a grammar refresher this year, so I am combining them in a whirlwind tour through Rod & Staff English Grammar Grade 8. Neither one of them have done much formal grammar the past couple of years except in foreign language studies, and it is time for a refresh.
I will post my lesson plans and method at a different time during this year, so stay tuned for that!
9th Grade Foreign Language – Greek
While I require Latin throughout elementary and middle school, I allow my children to choose which foreign language they would prefer to study in high school. So far, two of my older children chose to continue on with Latin, and one chose French.
My current 9th grader chose Greek, so she is working her way through Memoria Press’ First Form Greek using the streaming videos for the teaching help.
Admittedly, I am a bit nervous about her learning Greek because I know absolutely zero Greek (truly, it is all Greek to me!) and I don’t have a plan yet for how to grade her work. I could grade my older children’s Latin work and my daughter had an in-person French teacher, so this is not a situation I have faced before.
If you have suggestions in how to help her make corrections, I would love to hear them!
Traditional Logic I and Traditional Logic II
Lastly, my 9th grader is taking Memoria Press’ Traditional Logic I and Traditional Logic II with her older sister this year in a combined class here at home. I runs through the first semester and II will run during the second semester.
Their teacher? My 20 year old son! 🎉
I sat in on the first couple of classes and I could not be more excited about my son teaching the Little Girls as I call them. My son has missed being in the Classical World and has an in-depth understanding of Logic. So far, this is a great fit for all parties involved, including me!
Are you teaching 9th Grade this year? What are your children studying? I would love to read any comments, so please share! ❤
