Learning About My Country, ‘Tis of Thee
My Country, Tis of Thee, also known as America, is a well-known American song. Several years ago, my children and I spent 8 weeks learning classic American songs (that was so fun!), and this was at the top of the list.
My Country, ‘Tis of Thee has an interesting history. The original lyrics were written by Reverend Samuel Francis Smith, however, the author of the melody is not well-known. The melody was used by many other countries prior to coming to the United States.
The first documented version of this particular melody dates to 1761, and printed by the American colonies which were still under the rule of Britain.
The Library of Congress has an excellent summary of the song’s origins, so hop over to that link if you would like more detail.
I have distinct memories of my Kindergarten teacher playing this song on the piano as we sang along with all four verses! 🇺🇸

Ideas for Using this Patriotic Copywork
If copywork is already part of your daily homeschool rhythm, simply add in this particular set in the next rotation.
If you are new to copywork, here are some ideas for using copywork to teach your children. Note that this list is for a variety of ages and stages. Choose the tips that are right for your children’s stage. You know them best!
- Have your child write one stanza per day. Read and analyze the stanza together, and note any words that are difficult for your child to read and spell. Review the phonics for harder spelling words. Make a note of harder words and review them each day of the school week. I write ours on the side of our white board so I will remember to review them!
- When analyzing the stanzas, take note of the nouns and verbs. Have your child underline each noun and circle each verb. This song is a perfect time to talk about abstract nouns such as ‘freedom’ and ‘liberty.’ It is also a great time to introduce imperative verbs such as ‘protect’ and ‘let.’
N.B.: If you teach Latin to your children, make sure you note the ‘Let’ at the beginning of multiple stanzas is the infamous hortatory subjunctive. English grammar does not have a direct translation of this grammatical mood. Just a fun Latin note!

Why I teach Latin in My Homeschool - Use this copywork to facilitate memory work. Memorizing is an important skill and elementary aged students are so good at it! Make it a goal to memorize all four stanzas of this beautiful song – Mom, too!
