September is here, and that means it’s time to settle into a new school routine! These September Color by Sight Word Worksheets are the perfect way to combine sight word practice with a bit of seasonal fun. Using Dolch Pre-Primer and Primer sight words, this packet helps children strengthen their reading skills while enjoying back-to-school and fall-themed coloring pages. Whether you use them in your homeschool, classroom centers, or for extra review at home, these worksheets offer an easy way to make sight word practice engaging and effective.
Last year, I published a packet of Color By Sight Word worksheets for the months of January through April. I am so excited to pick this series back up this year and will finish it through the month of December. Here we are already in September!
Since sight words need much practice, this whole year will focus on those common words we see every day. I will be utilizing various grades from the Dolch Sight Word List. This particular packet focuses on the Pre-Primer and Primer words from the Dolch Sight Word List.

This packet of September color by sight word worksheets will focus on words found on the Pre-Primer and Primer Dolch sight word lists.
If you’re not familiar, there are several lists of common, everyday words. The two most popular lists are the Dolch Sight Word List and Fry’s Word List.
I will use various levels of the Dolch Word List (Pre-Primer through 3rd Grade) throughout the year as we practice these sight words!

Teaching Ideas for this September Color by Sight Word Worksheets Packet
As with any worksheet, I advise going over the directions carefully with your child to make sure he understands the task. Because sight words are quite challenging for many children, take the time to go over each word on the page.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- If the sight word matches a particular spelling pattern, point out other words that also match that pattern.
For example: yellow has the vowel team OW. Write the word yellow on a piece of paper, and then write the words grow, snow, and bellow on the paper. Brainstorm other words that have the vowel team OW. - Point out any consonant blends in the sight words and review what a consonant blend is.
- Review color words, as they are used on every page! Some of the color words are from the Dolch list, so those are certainly worth mentioning.
- Review beginning blends, especially those found in color words.
- Choose a word and brainstorm other words that rhyme with it.
For example: Choose the word must. Brainstorm other words with your child that rhyme with long such as trust, gust, and dust.
Repeat with other Pre-Primer or Primer words such as soon, get, or jump. - Use the themes to have conversations: The worksheets with leaves or trees can be used to talk about the season of autumn and what characteristics we notice about that particular season. The pages of animals can be used to talk about an animal’s habitat, animal classification (what makes a mammal a mammal?), and your own pets (or the ones that your children would like to have!). Of course the Grandma page can be used to encourage conversation about grandparents and how wonderful they are!
