If your child needs extra repetition to read more smoothly and confidently, these December color by sight word worksheets make great morning work, literacy centers, or an easy add-on to your December homeschool plans.
My children always needed much help with sight words, as I imagine most early readers do. We practiced sight words in a variety of ways: beginning readers, traditional worksheets or flash cards, and even color by sight word worksheets! Those were always my girls’ favorite way to practice. So download this packet and practice in a fun way today!
Last year, I published a packet of Color By Sight Word worksheets for the months of January through April. I am so excited to pick this series back up this year and we finish it this month in December!
Each packet in this series focuses on words from the Dolch Sight Word List, using Pre-Primer, Primer, First Grade, Second Grade, and Third Grade words. This particular packet focuses on the Secnod and Third Grade Dolch Lists.

December Color By Sight Word Worksheets
This packet of Decemebr color by sight word worksheets will focus on words found on the Second Grade and Third Grade Dolch sight word lists.
If you’re not familiar, there are several lists of common, everyday words. The two most popular lists are the Dolch Sight Word List and Fry’s Word List.
I will use various levels of the Dolch Word List (Pre-Primer through 3rd Grade) throughout the year as we practice these sight words!

The December sight words worksheets have the main theme of Christmas (of course!), however, there are several winter-themed pages as well.

Teaching Ideas for December Color by Sight Word Pages
As with any worksheet, I advise going over the directions carefully with your child to make sure he understands the task. Because sight words are quite challenging for many children, take the time to go over each word on the page.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- If the sight word matches a particular spelling pattern, point out other words that also match that pattern.
For example: sleep has the vowel team EE. Write the word sleep on a piece of paper, and then write the words peep, feet, and meet on the paper. Brainstorm other words that have the vowel team EE. - Point out any consonant blends in the sight words and review what a consonant blend is.
- Review color words, as they are used on every page! Some of the color words are from the Dolch list, so those are certainly worth mentioning.
- Review beginning blends, especially those found in color words.
- Choose a word and brainstorm other words that rhyme with it.
For example: Choose the sight word green. Brainstorm other words with your child that rhyme with went such as mean, bean, queen, or teen.
Repeat with other Second Grade or Third Grade Dolch sight words such as ten, try, or best. - Use the themes to have conversations: The worksheets with snowman or mittens & gloves can be used to talk about the season of winter and what characteristics we notice about that particular season.
The pages with the gingerbread house and gingerbread boy can be a fun time to taste actual gingerbread! Or take the rest of the morning and decorate your own pre-bought gingerbread house. (I always see them at Wal-Mart in my area in the seasonal section.)
