As we get back into the swing of school, fall is the perfect season to add some fresh variety to your phonics lessons! In this post, you’ll find a collection of fall vowel activities that help children practice short and long vowels, vowel teams, and even those tricky r-controlled vowels. These fun, seasonal puzzles each have a fall theme such as pumpkins, leaves, and apples.
My 8 year old boy, currently in the 3rd grade, still needs ample amounts of phonics practice every day. Because he has been a slower reader, phonics is our top priority every single day, without fail! While we do enjoy our phonics-heavy spelling curriculum and phonics-heavy literature lessons, he needs a change of pace every now and then. And I do, too, if I am honest!
He saw me cutting out these fall phonics puzzles and said, “Oooh! Are these for me?!” I am always so happy when I can say, “Yes! I made these just for you.” ❤️ We will use them on Monday morning to start our school week off fresh!

Fall Vowel Activities – Phonics Puzzles
I have mentioned several times that my son does not enjoy the physical act of writing. I can hardly believe it, but he dislikes a pencil even worse than my other two (of five) children that couldn’t stand writing. I thought my oldest disliked writing the worst – but I was wrong!
This activity is the perfect mix of writing and matching. After matching several of the fall vocabulary words and vowels or vowel teams, he will need to write those words on the phonics worksheet.

The following is how we will use these vowel puzzle cards this week. Take these ideas and make them work for your situation!
How to Use Fall Vowel Activities and Puzzle Cards
There are 26 fall vocabulary words included in this packet – one for each letter of the alphabet. I will pull 13 of the cards for my son to use at the time. Because he still finds vowels and vowel team sounds a bit challenging, I will only have him work with a half at the time. Feel free to use the whole stack at once if your child is able to do that!
One side of the puzzle card contains the fall picture and vocabulary word. The goal is to match the picture card correctly to its vowel or vowel team match. Each word has a vowel or vowel team underlined to indicate which match should be found.
For example, the word ‘cornfield’ has the OR underlined. Your child should match the cornfield card with the card that states ‘R-controlled.’ After matching the card, review the other r-controlled words listed at the bottom to reinforce the sound and spelling.
I included a list of each type of vowel and vowel team in this packet. You might choose to match only the short vowel sounds. Or you can match only the vowel teams. One day, you could choose to only work on Bossy R and Schwa sounds.
After matching the cards and reading the example words at the bottom of each, your child can practice these vowels and vowel teams one more time on the worksheets provided.
There are two worksheets included: one with the first 13 fall vocabulary words and the second contains the second set of 13 fall vocabulary words. Children can use a regular pencil to write the fall words once, and then use a red pencil to write back over the vowel or vowel team and then underline it once more to isolate it.
