Pattern blocks have long been one of my favorite hands-on math tools for the early grades. These free pattern block printables are a simple way to give your child shape practice, visual discrimination work, and quiet hands-on learning without much prep from you.
This printable set includes 16 small pattern block cards sized at one-quarter page each. Eight cards feature completed pattern designs to copy, and eight cards include scattered blocks for matching and building practice. Use them for preschool, kindergarten, 1st grade, or any time you need a print-and-go math activity for young learners.
My girls are big pattern block fans! Whether we’re having school or having a day off, pattern blocks seem to make their way out of the container almost every day or two.
They have been using this set of pattern block mats for the past few weeks and they love them! The small 1/4 page size is just right for them.
Note: This packet was originally created in July 2014 and has been updated a couple of times through the years. Please download the newest version and enjoy again with your young learners!

Free Pattern Block Printables
I am thankful I found pattern blocks early in our homeschool life, because they quickly became a mainstay. Even now – 16 homeschool years later – someone pulls them off the shelf every week or two!
Make sure you have this set of free pattern block printables ready on your shelf along with a set of pattern blocks for easy access. My children always played with the items that were within reach, so make sure those are valuable learning games and toys.
🟧 If you need pattern blocks, I purchased this set of pattern blocks 16 years ago and they have held up beautifully through 5 children!

What’s Included in These Free Pattern Block Printables?
This free set includes 16 small pattern block cards printed across 4 full pages.
Inside this printable, you’ll find:
- 8 pattern cards with a completed design to copy
- 8 scattered block cards for matching and building practice
- Quarter-page cards that are easy to print, cut, and store
The smaller card size works well for little hands and makes this set easy to use during table time, centers, or quiet learning time at home.
These free pattern block printables have 2 sets: 1 set has block formations and the other set has scattered blocks on each card.
My younger daughter tends to like the scattered blocks and my 5-year-old almost always goes for the block formations.
To make this a bit harder for my 5-year-old, I have her make the block formation on the table while looking at the pattern – not match them on top of the pattern.

How to Use These Pattern Block Templates
There are several easy ways to use these pattern block printables with young learners.
- Have your child match the blocks directly on top of the card
- Ask your child to recreate the design beside the card
- Use the scattered block cards for visual matching practice
- Place them in your child’s workbox
- Have them ready to go for trips out of the house (waiting rooms, car trips, Grandma’s house, etc.). I keep them in a plastic pencil box, as I do most of my homeschool manipulatives.
- Place the cards in a math center or morning basket
- Laminate the cards for repeated use throughout the year

How to Make This Activity Easier or More Challenging
One of the nice things about these free pattern block printables is that you can adjust them for different ages and ability levels.
For younger children, let them place the pattern blocks directly on top of the card to match the design. This gives them support as they learn to notice shape, color, and position.
For children who are ready for a little more challenge, have them build the design beside the card instead of directly on top of it. This requires more careful observation and strengthens visual discrimination and spatial reasoning.
You can also separate the cards by difficulty. Start with the simpler designs first, then save the more detailed cards for later.
For repeated use, laminate the cards or place them in dry-erase sleeves. That makes them easy to pull out again for math centers, quiet table work, or independent practice.

What is the password? I would like to use this to make more pattern maps but cannot open it in Photoshop without a password.
Hi Chris, It’s against my Terms of Use for you to alter the document in any way, and that includes pulling out the clip art and creating something new. This is why all of my documents are locked with a password.
