This Valentine’s Day mystery picture set is a fun way to sneak in phonics practice while kids reveal a sweet hidden picture. Your learner will read and decode words that target blends and digraphs, rhyming words, and long vowel patterns, then color to uncover the Valentine-themed images. It’s a quick literacy add-on for homeschool or the classroom—and an answer key is included.
It’s been awhile since I shared something fun and holiday-ish. As we head into the pink hearts of Valentine’s Day, download this fun set of mystery pictures for your young ones!
If you have been a long time reader here at Mama’s, you know that I often try to incorporate a few holiday or seasonally-themed ideas for my children. This has gotten much harder as they have grown older, however!
M y 8-year-old still needs a tremendous amount of phonics work, so these mystery pictures are a great fit for her. My 9-year-old was a much more natural reader, so I didn’t do much phonics work with her. Unfortunately, I am realizing the result of that now as she is struggling with spelling. These phonics worksheets will be good practice for her as well.

- Skills: blends/digraphs, rhyming, long vowels
- Includes: answer key
- Use: literacy centers, homeschool phonics practice
Note that these pages are a little advanced for beginning readers, and require children to read words such as quote, strive, sustain, and reign.
** If you’re looking for beginning reading practice, make sure you look at my Kindergarten Phonics packet which focuses on CVC words and Pre-Primer and Primer Dolch Sight words. See if that would be a better fit for your learner.
What’s Included in the Valentine’s Day Mystery Picture Set
This printable set includes three mystery picture worksheets, each with a different phonics focus. As children read the words and follow the directions, they’ll color the correct spaces to reveal the hidden picture.
When finished, kids will uncover:
- A strawberry dipped in chocolate
- A diamond ring
- A butterfly
An answer key is included so you can quickly check work (or help a student who gets stuck).
Phonics Skills Practiced in These Mystery Pictures
These pages are designed as phonics mystery pictures, so children are reading real words while they work—not just coloring. Since my girls love to color so much, this is an easy way to sneak in phonics practice! They get their favorite colored pencils, and off they go.
Blends and Digraphs
Children will practice reading words with common blends and digraphs as they decode and complete each mystery picture.
Rhyming Words
Some parts of the activity focus on recognizing and reading rhyming words—great for building phonemic awareness and early spelling skills. Two of my girls (whom I suspect are stealth dyslexics) have always had much trouble with rhyming. Activities like this help.
Long Vowel Patterns
This set includes practice with long vowel sounds spelled in different ways. It’s a helpful way to reinforce patterns that students see often in early reading. You will see long vowel patterns that have a silent e mixed in with vowel teams.
