CVC and CVCe Worksheets for Short A and Long A Practice

CVC and CVCe worksheets are a helpful way for beginning readers to practice the difference between short vowel words and silent e words. This printable set focuses on short A CVC words and long A CVCe words, giving your child clear practice with patterns such as cap/cape, tap/tape, and pan/pane. These pages are designed for kindergarten and early first grade and work well for short, focused phonics review.

My Kindergartner and I have worked and worked on mastering CVC words this school year. I would not say that they are mastered, but we are working diligently on them each day.

I tried to introduce the long a vowel sound, but it led to a bit of confusion. I put that learning on hold just a few weeks and we pressed on with more CVC activities.

This past week, I tried introducing Long A again, and it was met with a bit more success! My son does have quite a bit of trouble differentiating the short and long A sounds, so that is what we will practice this coming week.

Because I had a hard time finding just CVC and CVCe words in one packet, I made him a worksheet set. I hope you will find it helpful for your beginning readers also!

CVC and CVCe Worksheets for Short A and Long A Practice

In this worksheet packet, you will find only Short Vowel A CVC words and Long Vowel A CVCe words. Words like ‘cane’ or ‘wave.’

I will have another packet available at a later date that includes other Long A vowel teams such as ai or ay. I didn’t include those pages in this set as to not muddy the waters.

How to Use These Short A and Long A Worksheets

There are a variety of ways to use these Short a and Long a worksheets in your homeschool or classroom. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

• Use 1–2 pages per day for short, focused phonics practice.
  Children need quite a bit of spiral review. Use 1 page each day in addition to your regular phonics curriculum.
• Start with short A words before introducing long A words.
  Short a words – hat, cap, bat, pad – are much easier to hear than long a. Practice listening for the short and long sounds each day with auditory exercises.
• Read the words aloud together before completing each page.
  I always make sure my child understands the directions and the words on the page before turning him loose to work independently. Rarely in the K-2 grades are my children able to work on phonics independently, so keep your expectations realistic in that regard!
• Use the posters as quick review or warm-up practice.
  Practice the words on the poster together a few days in a row. Then put the posters away for several days. Bring them back out again later to “freshen up” the short and long a sounds.
