Summer vocabulary words are a helpful way to add seasonal spelling, copywork, writing, and word work to your homeschool day. This printable summer word list includes a variety of familiar summer words for preschool and elementary students, along with richer words that older students can use for writing prompts, notebooking, or descriptive writing.
You can keep the list nearby during the summer months, use it with a writing center, or print it for quick seasonal language arts practice.
Many homeschoolers take only a small part of the summer off so we can have frequent breaks throughout the year. My favorite homeschool schedule is ending our year at the end of May, and then starting the new year right after July 4th.
If you’re like me and enjoy starting school “in the middle of summer”, this summer vocabulary words list will be a great fit! Go ahead and print it so you have one thing checked off of your list.

Ways to Use These Summer Vocabulary Words
Use this summer word list in simple, low-prep ways throughout your homeschool week. Choose 1 or more of the following:
Weekly spelling lists – If you have a particular spelling program, continue to use that, only choose 2-5 words from this list as “add-ons.”
Summer creative writing prompts – Choose several words from the list as summer writing prompts, or you could have your child choose the words that interests him the most.
Daily handwriting or copywork – choose several “letters” from the list – Letters A through D, for example – and have your child copy those in print or cursive.
Word wall or pocket chart – Write several of these words on the white board, or print and use around the room to create a word wall and use for a few weeks. Or place word cards in your pocket chart.
Sort by Parts of Speech – Determine whether the summer vocabulary word is a noun, adjective, verb, or one of the other 8 parts of speech.

Alphabetizing Practice – Reinforce alphabetical order with this list. Choose only a few words at the time based on your child’s ability.
Story starters or sentence building – This is a fun one that my kids and I do often! Choose the first word on the list. Go around the room as each person makes a sentence using the next word on the list. You can choose to make these serious or silly sentences!
For older students, you could also have them choose several words from the list and write a paragraph about a summer memory, a favorite outdoor activity, or the differences between summer weather and another season.
