Learning colors gives your preschooler so much to notice and talk about! These free color flashcards for preschool feature 12 colors with pictures of foods, animals, and everyday objects to name together. Use them to practice identifying colors, look for matching objects around your home, or enjoy a few minutes of picture conversation with your young one. I have listed several ideas for using these below, so don’t miss those!
Even though my children are long past the preschool stage (sniff, sniff), that age remains one of my favorite stages! In fact, I still teach Cubbies (ages 3 through 5) at our church each Wednesday night because I have such a heart for little ones.
These color flashcards for preschoolers are a great way to interact with your preschooler without having a formal lesson. In fact, I find that most of preschool learning at home is enjoyed and retained when there are few formal lessons.
Download this set of Color Flashcards and enjoy some learning time with your young one! Conversations await!

How to Prepare Your Color Flashcards
The flashcards are printed on three 8.5×11″ pages. After printing, simply cut the cards apart on the black lines.
A few helpful preparation tips:
- Print on card stock – I purchase this brand of card stock because it is most frequently on sale and is sturdy enough.
- I encourage you to laminate these flashcards so they will survive longer than a few uses. If you choose to laminate, it’s easier to print, then laminate the whole sheet, and then cut apart.
This is the updated version of the laminator I have used for 17+ years. - I printed my cards on the Draft Color setting on the printer to save on ink.

Ways to Use Color Flashcards with Your Preschooler
This section is always my favorite to write in any post! Here are few ways to use these color flashcards with your preschooler. Choose one or two and off you go on your learning adventures!
Choose one color each week
Some families use a Color of the Week curriculum. While those are fun and provide a learning plan, you don’t need to buy one to be successful. Here is another option:
Choose one color each week, starting with let’s say red. Be mindful of pointing out all of the red objects you see during the week. Brainstorm words that rhyme with red. Find all of the red bears in the Bear Counters. Collect red items from around the house and keep in a small basket to talk about during the week.
And of course, choose the red card from this set of color flashcards to display every day during your more formal learning time.
Sort animal counters by color card
Choose two different colors – in this case choose red and yellow. Place the red and yellow animal counters in a pile and then have your child place them by the correct color card.
Choosing only two colors to start with prevents decision fatigue.
If your child is able, choose one color card and have your child sort animal or bear counters out of the container.

Play I-Spy with a color flash card
Choose an object on the card and play I Spy. Here’s an example:
“I spy a red wagon.”
Your child should point to the red wagon on the card.
Continue playing until you are ready to move on to something else!
Practice vocabulary and conversation
Naming everyday objects is a great way to increase your child’s vocabulary. Talk about each object on the card asking questions such as:
- What is the name of the yellow fruit that we peel before we eat?
- I see two animals on this card. What are their names?
- There’s a green hammer on this card. What do we do with a hammer? How do we use it?
The opportunity to have great conversations with your children – even from very young ages – is plentiful! As a mama that has older children, let me encourage you to take the time to talk with your children frequently and joyful. It is true that the time is fleeting, so make the most of it!

This is my best tip: Keep a set of Color Flashcards in your purse.
Laminate these color flash cards for preschool and then put them on a ring to hold them altogether. They’re small and should fit right down the side of your purse.
I bought a variety pack of ring sizes like this one at Walmart.
When you’re stuck in a waiting room, in the car, or standing in line somewhere that is taking forever, you can pull out these cards and have something screen-free to do!
Talk about each picture and where you would see the object or where you would use it. If it’s an animal, ask where his home would be. If it’s something around the house, ask where you would look for it. (Milk is found in the refrigerator, for example.)
Have a few screen-free ideas tucked in your purse or child’s book bag for times when your child is squirrely and you need something to engage him. It takes a little bit of preparation and intention, but it is well worth it!
Resist the constant screens, Mamas! ❤️
