4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices 2026-2027 Classical Christian

It is one of my favorite times of the year: time to publish my homeschool curriculum choices for the year! I always love to read what other families choose to use in their homeschools, so it brings me much joy to share our choices with all of you. Today I am sharing our 4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum choices for 2026-2027.

I have been writing posts about homeschool curriculum choices for well over a decade now, and I could write a whole book about how the homeschool world has changed in the last 17 years. Curriculum and how homeschool moms use it has changed far more than I could have anticipated in those early years.

This year, our homeschool only has three students. My older two children have graduated, and I will school my senior, my 10th grader, and my 4th grader. It’s always bittersweet when my youngest completes a grade, because I know it’s the last time I will teach it. It is cliche, Mamas, but the years do go by so fast.

Through the past 17 years of homeschooling, I have tried a large variety of curriculum. I teach my children a Christian Classical education here at home, and listed below are my favorite curricula choices for 4th grade. I have used other curriculum in the past that I loved but it just wouldn’t be the best fit for my current 4th grader.

Summary of Our 4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

Just a note: I have listed a lot of curriculum below. Thankfully, there are only a few subjects that we fully do every day. Others are only done 1-3 times per week. Don’t think I’m a Homeschool Super Mom that does all of these every day.

4th Grade Christian Classical Homeschool

I teach our children a Christian Classical education here at home, and you will see that my 4th grade curriculum choices reflect that. I mostly follow Memoria Press grade levels – this year is 4th Grade New Users Core – and switch out a few things here and there with other curriculum as needed.

Even though my son has had a classical education since Kindergarten, you will see that I use the Memoria Press 4th Grade New Users Guide. It is written for those students joining Memoria Press in the 4th grade for the first time, but I intentionally use it for my children that needed extra time with phonics.

The 4th Grade New Users Guide covers the same material as the 3rd and 4th grade Guides, just at a different pace that works best for our family.

We rotate through the K-2 Art Cards each year in our homeschool as one of our family studies. This year will primarily come from the First Grade Art Cards set. We have both the 5×7 cards and the poster size. We love them!

4th Grade Latin and Recitation

While my son and I dabbled in Prima Latina last year, we did not make it through much of the curriculum. My son needed a very heavy dose of phonics and reading, and that took up the bulk of our school day.

So I am very excited to start Latina Christiana with my boy this year! It is such a fun introduction to Latin, and is very teachable for parents that do not know Latin at all. This was my case when I started Latin with my oldest 13 years ago. And if I can do it, anyone can.

This will be our 5th child to begin Latin using Latina Christiana from Memoria Press. While the assignments and the amount of Latin learned each week is very appropriate for this age and stage, I know this will be a huge challenge and push for my son. I will be there to help him be successful each step of the way.

While my oldest children used the DVDs (now available as streaming), I will teach my son since I feel comfortable doing so.

We will use everything included in the Latina Christiana Basic Set, and I’m also including the Games and Puzzles Set and the Latina Christiana Review Worksheets.

The pacing for each of these is included in the Lesson Plans, and they are well worth the money!

4th Grade Spelling and Grammar

My son used Traditional Spelling I and II with great success, so we will carry on with Traditional Spelling III this year. The methodical phonics instruction and the spelling exercises are exceptional. Traditional Spelling is by far my favorite spelling program for my children that had difficulty learning to read.

This level of Traditional Spelling wasn’t yet available for my older children, and I’m thrilled to use this with my son this year. Phonics has been a challenge for him, and I know how solid this program is.

Our homeschool could never be complete without the lovely Rod and Staff English Grammar! It might be the only curriculum I have used the entire 17 years of homeschooling.

This year, my son and I will work our way through Rod and Staff English Grammar Grade 4 (the yellow book). The Grade 4 and 5 books are so solid, and I’m excited to go back through it again!

Frequency:
Spelling – daily
Grammar – 3-4 times per week

4th Grade Literature and Poetry

My son didn’t work on composition at all last year outside of mastering sentence writing. Our main focus was phonics and reading, and I know there will be many years of learning to write well. So I do not feel behind. 🙂

Thankfully, our literature curriculum along with Rod and Staff English Grammar gives us a multitude of opportunities to practice composition this year.

My son and I will use selections from Memoria Press’ 4th Grade Literature Set. It is such a fun literature year, and I can’t wait to read through these books again with him. Because he has read Homer Price only 9 million times, I substituted it for The Cricket in Times Square in the set.

Also, we are doing Winne the Pooh as a read aloud and will substitute Charlotte’s Web for that option.

Together this year, we will read Charlotte’s Web (this is from the 3rd grade set), The Cricket in Times Square, The Blue Fairy Book, and Dangerous Journey. This reading list is pretty ambitious for this particular child, but we will do the best we can.

We will also read and memorize several poems from Poetry for the Grammar Stage.

Frequency:
Literature – daily
Poetry – a few times a month

4th Grade Cursive Practice

My son’s favorite activity is certainly not the physical act of handwriting, so we must continue to work on cursive. We will use Cursive Copybook II from Memoria Press, along with the cursive handwriting practice printables here at Mama’s Learning Corner.

Frequency: Daily

4th Grade Math

I am thankful my son enjoys math! We will use Rod and Staff Math Grade 4 this year, along with the blackline masters to reinforce math facts.

Each day, we will work through all of the review exercises and oral work in the Teacher’s Manual. If you are not familiar with Rod and Staff, make sure you don’t miss out on the Teacher’s Manual because that is where the great teaching ideas are!

Frequency: Daily

4th Grade Christian Studies

As the dynamics of our homeschool has changed throughout the years, so has our Bible Time. This year, my son will participate in our morning Bible Time, of course, and then we will study Christian Studies I, which covers Genesis through entry into Canaan.

I will require him to complete all of the memorization and complete only 1 or 2 of the questions each week. Even though he memorizes verses in Awana, the Christian Studies curriculum uses the King James Version, which is so beautiful.

Frequency: 2-3 days per week

4th Grade Greek Myths and Timeline

For Classical Studies in 4th grade, my son and I will read and work through D’Aulaire’s Greek Myths using the Memoria Press study guide and streaming videos. My son and I will read each story together and complete the activities in the workbook.

While I am not one for “video school” in the elementary years, I did purchase the streaming teaching for this subject. He will watch the videos on his own. They look fun!

I will require him to write all of the definitions and 1-2 of the comprehension questions. We will complete all of them orally, but his writing task will only be 1 or 2 of my choosing.

We will also continue our work on Memoria Press’ Timeline program. My son will start his own Timeline Workbook and memorize the 3rd and 4th grade dates.

Frequency:
Greek Myths – 1-2 days per week
Timeline – Just a few minutes each morning

4th Grade Science and Geography

My son will be learning about mammals all this year with Memoria Press’ Mammals science set. The reading and writing level will be a good fit for him. We will only work on this 1-2 days each week.

He will also begin geography studies with Memoria Press’ States and Capitals program. He will learn the states and capitals of the United States, including their spellings and identifying them on a map. Memoria Press’ geography programs for grades 4-6 are some of my favorite subjects for the elementary years. The pacing of the memorization each week is just right.

Frequency:
Mammals – 1-2 days each week
Geography – 1 heavier day and then just light check-in 2-3 more times each week
