I am teaching 4th grade for the fifth and final time this year, and each child—and each season of our family life—has required something a little different. On this page, I have gathered our 4th grade homeschool curriculum plans from multiple school years so you can compare the books, programs, and approaches we used.
You will see how our homeschool gradually moved from a more eclectic plan to a Christian classical approach, along with the adjustments I made for the children that needed extra. “Extras” include topics such as more intense phonics instruction, more time to understand how to form letters consistently (vital!), or more time and resources to learn to formulate a thoughtful response to an open-ended question.
My hope is that these real-life homeschool plans will help you choose curriculum that fits your own child and family rather than feeling that you must recreate someone else’s homeschool.
My best piece of hard-earned homeschool wisdom: Teach the child that is sitting across from you at the school table. Do not teach the child you think he ought to be or you want him to be. Teach the child that is looking you in the eyes right now!

4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum – 2026–2027
This 4th grade homeschool year will be fairly streamlined for me since I have used so many of these materials through the years. I am especially excited about the spelling!
We will continue to focus on heavy phonics, literature, and math. We will begin our real Latin journey using Latina Christiana. Also included are Mammals for science, States & Capitals for geography, and Classical Studies I.

This school year, we started using mostly Memoria Press and implemented a true classical homeschool – because I finally understood what that meant! It was a great school year filled with a lot of combining my 4th and 6th grader to get us on the classical education track.
We used Rod and Staff Spelling, Classical Composition, and it was our first year using Rod and Staff Math. This year was a major learning curve for me in how to school my children well.

Sadly, I do not have a 4th grade curriculum post – or any curriculum post for this year – written. I was newly pregnant with our sweet #5 and spent most of the summer either sick and nauseous or lying in the bed.
I had bigger fish to fry than writing curriculum posts!
I’m sad there is this hole in the list, however.
4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum – 2014-2015
This was my 1st year teaching 4th grade! My oldest son was an eager learner and 4th grade was just plain fun even though I didn’t have a very good grasp on the direction our homeschool was moving. I just plugged along and did the best I could.
My son continued work in Singapore Math, which was a great fit for him. He did the All About Spelling Level 4 for about a month, but was a very natural speller and didn’t need more dedicated phonics work. Most of my homeschool thoughts and wisdom are more general in nature, however, I do have some that are homeschool grade specific. I hope these will be of some use to you as you consider teaching your 4th grader at home.
- Some children continue to need very intense phonics and spelling help throughout the entire 4th grade. That is okay. Continue to teach intense phonics even if you have been doing it since Kindergarten. Some children are just slower to develop that part of their brains.
- Some children can drop spelling and phonics help very early and do not need that type of instruction in the 4th grade. That is okay. Just move on to something else and don’t second guess it!
- Resist the urge to put away the flash cards. Your children need to know math facts cold for all four operations. They will thank you when they get to Pre-Algebra.
- Your 4th grader does not need to write in every single answer on the page. This is okay. If you’re using Memoria Press Study Guides, I assign only a certain number of questions to be written in a complete answer.
- If your 4th grader’s academic stamina is poor or your child processes information slowly, they will need extra time to complete the work. This is okay. You might need to cut out a subject or greatly streamline the work. This, too, is okay.
