These free Johnny Appleseed coloring pages turn a simple coloring activity into a simple history lesson for young learners. The 11-page printable packet includes a cover plus 10 full-page pictures, each with one or two simple sentences about Johnny Appleseed’s life. For years and years, my girls loved coloring! If we were studying a topic and I couldn’t find coloring pages to add, I usually made a set myself. This was the case when we studied Johnny Appleseed many years ago when all of my four oldest children were all still elementary age.
I usually combined my girls with history, science, and literature in those younger days. During our Apple Unit Study, we would spend all week learning and researching apples and Johnny Appleseed. The fall always has some of my favorite unit studies for the younger years!
This year, my Kindergartner and I will read many books about Johnny Appleseed. He is not old enough to work on Johnny Appleseed worksheets, so we will just tuck those away for another year.

Add Beginning Reading and Grammar Practice
Use the coloring pages as reading and grammar practice. Remind your young ones what makes a sentence – a complete thought with a capital letter starting the sentence and an end mark.
You can also have your child underline or highlight familiar words on each page. For example, you can choose the word apple or Johnny on each page for your child to highlight. Are there any other words your child recognizes? See how much they can read to you!
Practice Narration
After reading about Johnny Appleseed, use the pages for narration and see how much of the story your child can tell back to you using the coloring picture prompts.
Include Simple Mapwork
Find Massachusetts on a map of the United States. Which way is west? Make sure your child knows! If he is not familiar with a map and a compass rose, this is a perfect time to introduce it.

A Simple Johnny Appleseed Mini-Unit for Young Learners
You can use the coloring pages to create a simple week of Johnny Appleseed learning without preparing a complicated unit study.
On the first day, introduce John Chapman and color the cover and first page. During the week, read a Johnny Appleseed book, complete one or two coloring pages each day, observe the seeds inside an apple, and find Massachusetts and the westward territories on a map. On the final day, assemble the completed pages into a book and ask your child to use the pictures to retell what he or she learned.
