CVC Word Search Printable – Short Vowel Worksheets

This CVC word search printable gives your beginning reader extra practice with short vowel words in a fun, low-pressure way. The packet includes 5 short vowel CVC word search worksheets — one each for short a, short e, short i, short o, and short u. Each page also includes a small handwriting and spelling section, making this an easy print-and-go phonics activity for Kindergarten, 1st Grade, or early readers who need more CVC word practice.

The words in these CVC word searches are hidden horizontally and vertically, making them easier for younger readers than diagonal or backward word searches.

My oldest and youngest daughters loved word searches when they were early readers.  Even though they both took a bit longer to read fluently, they sure did enjoy using a pencil or highlighter to mark off words as they found them.

Even though those same sweet girls are now 15 and 11 1/2, they still love word searches!  I updated this packet for my soon-to-be reader that is currently 5 years old.  Hopefully he will enjoy word search puzzles as much as his sisters did!

Have a Phonics Review with Your Beginning Reader

This type of activity is an opportune time to review phonics with your child.

• Find other items around the room that have the same short vowel sound.
• Choose a few words from the worksheet and take turns finding words that rhyme.
• Read through the word bank list together and find all of the words with the same beginning letter.
• Review the 5 vowels and their short vowel sounds.
